As of May 15th, 2014, 3 million more cars have been recalled by General Motors bringing the number of recalled cars above 11 million. The recall came about due to 5 safety defects that have caused approximately 13 injuries and accidents as well as thousands of complaints.
On April 20th, 2014 it was reported that 1.3 million more General Motors cars were recalled because of steering problems. In this recall the cars included are the Chevy Cobalt, Malibu Maxx, Saturn Ion, 2004-2010 Chevrolet Malibu, Pontiac G6 models, and the Saturn Aura. Additionally, over 1.7 million GM cars have been recalled because of faulty ignition. About 3 quarter of a million cars were recalled in early February as well. This recall included the 2005-2007 Pontiac G5, 2005-2007 Chevrolet Cobalt, 2003-2007 Saturn Ion, 2007 Saturn Sky, 2006-2007 Chevrolet HHR, 2006-2007 Pontiac Solstice, and the 2005-2006 Pontiac Pursuit.
General Motors has received heavy criticism after they admitted that their engineers knew of the problems in 2004 and only recently admitted to it after 10 years. In 2004, GM engineers had testified in a lawsuit regarding how to fix the defects that led to the death of a Georgia nurse in an automobile accident. While driving, the ignition switch can move to the accessory position causing an unsafe driving issue. If this happens, the car will shut down automatically as well as the engine, power steering, airbags, and brakes. According to GM, drivers who use heavy key chains are more apt to cause the switch to move position. They also stated that jarring, impact related, and rough road conditions could also cause the switch to move.
As a result of 13 deaths linked to the GM ignition problems, federal prosecutors have begun a criminal investigation. During a videotaped interview, Mary Barra, GM CEO stated that their process had problems that led to horrible things. GM said that the massive car recall should begin in April 2014.
